Why GIB® Stopping Shouldn’t Be a DIY Project
GIB® stopping requires precision, the right materials, and practiced technique to get a skilled tradesman-level result. While it may seem tempting to DIY with a bucket of compound and a taping knife, we’ve seen many DIY plastering attempts turn into costly nightmares. Here are some common issues when interior plastering isn’t done by a professional:

Achieving a perfectly smooth finish is harder than it looks. Don’t take chances on your walls and leave the GIB® stopping to the experts for a beautiful result!
What our customers say about us
We Fix and Re-Plaster Poorly Done Walls
Have you had a bad plastering job done in the past? Or perhaps you’re noticing issues like ceiling cracks and uneven patches from a subpar stopping job? We can help. Above Board specialises in re-stopping walls and ceilings that were not finished correctly, restoring them to a smooth condition.

Our Interior Plastering Services Include:
GIB® stopping for new builds & renovations:We undertake full GIB® stopping for fresh installations, applying multiple coats (generally achieving a Level 4 finish, or Level 5 upon request) to deliver perfectly smooth new walls and ceilings.
Joint and crack repairs: If your existing interior walls have settling cracks, dents, or holes (from wear and tear or renovations), we expertly patch and plaster these areas so they blend in seamlessly with the surrounding surface.
Skim coating and resurfacing: In cases where walls are heavily textured or uneven, we can apply a skim coat – a thin plaster layer over the entire surface – to even it out. This is ideal for refreshing old plaster walls or achieving a premium ultra-smooth finish throughout a room.
Re-stopping and remediation: As mentioned, we re-stop poorly done GIB® work. We’ll remove the failing compound or tape and refinish the surface correctly. This service is a lifesaver for anyone who’s had a botched DIY attempt or an unreliable contractor.
Interior solid plastering: For solid walls (brick or concrete block interiors that need plaster), we also offer traditional interior plastering. This creates a smooth plaster finish on masonry surfaces, ready for paint or wallpaper.
Whether it’s a single room or an entire house, our interior plasterers deliver exceptional workmanship. Your walls will literally be as smooth as glass, with no imperfections in sight.

Frequently Asked Questions for GIB® Stopping & Interior Plastering
What is GIB® stopping, and is it the same as interior plastering?
GIB® stopping is the process of filling and smoothing the joints and screw holes on plasterboard walls or ceilings. Basically, it’s a specific type of interior plastering focused on plasterboard surfaces. After we install the GIB® sheets at GIB® fixing stage, our plasterers apply paper tape and plaster compounds over every seam, corner, and fastener. We do this in multiple layers, sanding between coats, until the entire surface is flat and uniform. In everyday terms, interior plastering can also refer to this process. The end goal is the same: to create blemish-free walls and ceilings ready for paint. When we’re done with GIB® stopping, you won’t see any gaps, lines, or screws at all.
Will there be a lot of dust or mess while you’re plastering?
We take steps to keep your home as clean and livable as possible during the plastering process. Sanding the dried plaster does create fine dust, there’s no avoiding that. However, we minimise it by using drop cloths, plastic coverings, and even dust extraction sanders where we can. Before we start, we’ll ask if you’d like help moving or covering any furniture.
How long does it take to plaster a room?
The timeline can vary depending on the size of the room and the level of finish you want. As a general guide, a single room can often be plastered in 2–3 days. Day 1 might involve taping and the first coat of compound, Day 2 a second coat (and possibly a third for a top quality finish), and another day for final sanding and touch-ups. Each coat of plaster usually needs 24 hours to dry before the next layer or sanding. For an entire house, we can work area by area in stages – it could take about a week or more for a full interior on a standard three-bedroom home.
What if my walls are old and not GIB®? Can you plaster over other surfaces?
Yes, we sure can. While a lot of our work is on modern GIB® plasterboard, we also have experience in traditional solid plastering. If you have older lathe-and-plaster walls or brick/concrete interior surfaces, our team can apply plaster to repair or smooth those as well. We use appropriate plaster compounds and techniques for each surface.
Do you do plastering in Orewa and Silverdale as well?
Absolutely. Although this page is about our Whangaparāoa services, Above Board Interiors covers all nearby areas. We serve the entire Hibiscus Coast, including Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater, Red Beach, and Hatfields Beach plus of course every suburb on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula (Stanmore Bay, Manly, Arkles Bay, Gulf Harbour, Army Bay, etc.). Even if you have a project further away, remember we also service Auckland and Mangawhai so we can easily coordinate to get your job done wherever you need us.
